A. There are several other types of software available, and we need to distinguish between web based and desktop based. A desktop based application would be similar to a program like Systran, and excellent translation software program, but a program that is run off of your desktop because of its size ( 350MB) and because it is designed more for text translation's opposed to web page translation.

The next option is an option that you manually upload files or individual pages  to be translated, get the results and then upload the translated page back to your server. It is quite obvious if you have any number of files that the process becomes laborious to say the least. Those programs also have a tendency to time out and you are left with a half completed project.

Q. How come on some of my pages, I see question marks or forward slashes instead of characters?

A. You do not have the proper Language Packs installed into your browser. IE and some of the other browsers have what are called language packs that allow the browser to read foreign characters and these are usually required for Japanese, Chinese & Korean. Do a Windows update and search for Language packs , install them and you will see all the characters correctly.

Q. What should I set my cache setting too?

A. We suggest you leave it to the Default setting, as this will grow your website organically.

Q. Once I install the software should I go and click on all the pages and translate everything for the search engines?

A. No, we suggest that you go to each major section of your site and click on the translations, but leave the inner pages alone for others to click on. This will allow your website to grow organically, so as not to alert the search engines. If the search engine comes to your site one day and indexes 300 pages and then comes back 2 weeks later and find 2,700 pages that will generally alert them, and they may consider it spamming the engines.

Search engines give weight to a site that is older and that has a slow steady growth, and this is what 5 Minute Translate will give you. As more and more of your foreign pages get indexed, the more your site will grow. Remember, this is a sophisticated tool, and if it is abused you will only hurt your websites.
 

Q. Can I install this on a friends website?

A. No, as stated at the bottom of the website and your software license agreement, quote:

You are purchasing a single user license which allows you to place  the software on up to 50 websites owned by you. You do not have the right to sell, resell, modify, rent or add this software to any other sites, built by you for sale, rent, lease or commissioned. By purchasing this software you agree to the above terms. Any violation of the terms of this software will result in copyright violation.

 Which basically means, you can put it on up to 50 of your own websites. Plus, with such a great affiliate program, why would you give something away you could make money on? Install the affiliate code on all your websites, send your friends to your site to try it out and in no time at all you will have a nice passive income stream.

Q. Why does the Arabic translation flip the text.

A. Unlike English that is read from left to right, Arabic is read right to left so the software flips the text for the language needs.

Q. If I constantly update my site, do I need to retranslate everything?

A. It depends on how your site is built. If you utilize ssi_Includes files in your web design, then no, you do not have to add anything.

If you do not utilize ssi_Includes then you would need to need to add the translate code to each new page.

Q. Is there anyone that this software would NOT work for?

A. If you are a large multinational company selling high end products on the Internet and need word for word accurate translation, then this would not be for you. As mentioned earlier, there is software or machine based translation, and there is personal translation, where a person, usually a local to the region translates you website word for word, giving you the most accurate translation possible, ( also, the most expensive )

Q. Does my server need anything special to use this software?

A. You need to have php enabled and the ability to change permissions (chmod) on one folder.

Q. So my new pages will actually get indexed by the search engines?

A. Yes, once the pages are cached, they will be read and indexed by the search engines. That is why it is best to leave the cache setting to default. If you regularly go in and dump the cache, and have pages indexed, you will lose the page indexes.

Q. Should I use text links or graphics for my navigation ?

A. Excellent question. If you want full use of the software you should use a text based link for your navigation. If you noticed when you ran the software demo on this site, that the navigation bar at the bottom of the pages changed also, because we utilized text, which gets translated. If you use graphics or java script, the navigation will not be translated, making it more difficult for the user to navigator the site.

Q. Do I need to install the software in each directory?

A. The translation software MUST be installed in the ROOT directory. The ROOT directory is the same folder that your index.htm page is located.

Q. Does this work with all browsers?

A. We have extensively tested this with IE, Opera, Netscape and Firefox. The only issues we have ever encountered was with Firefox bringing up a  occasional blank page. This is strictly a browser related issue and has nothing to do with the software. When designing software you have to design for the majority and with IE still controlling over 94% of the browser market we have to make sure that the major browser are all compatable.
